Character name: Urdnot Wrex
Fandom: Mass Effect
Timeline: Mass Effect 3 - Before the genophage is cured
Age: It's never canonly stated but at the very least a thousand years old. Though potentially much older.
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Wrex is one of the last few krogan battlemasters, which affords him added biotic abilities (warp, throw, barrier, and stasis - more on these in a moment) to supplement his natural racial abilities as a krogan. Krogan in general are bred to be some of the toughest, battle-hardened races in the entire galaxy.
How would they use their abilities?: He'd use them as a merc, but more than likely, he'd use them to support Commander Shepard and the rest of the crew of the Normandy on their endeavors.
Appearance: Wrex stands at about 7 feet tall and weighs in at approximately one ton. His scales are a reddish-orange hue, while his hide is a bit more on the tan side. His appearance is very much like a bipedal lizard, with a massive hump on his back. Adorning his face are a multitude of scars, including three that start at the top of his head plate and cross down the right side of his face. His eyes are blood red with slit pupils, with dark circles beneath. Essentially a dinosaur with mind powers and a love of shotguns.

Before we get started, I'll toss up a glossary of terms:

Biotic - A lifeform that is capable of manipulating mass effect fields to lift, warp, or otherwise create protective barriers

Mass effect fields - created through the use of element zero. Element zero can increase or decrease the mass content of space-time when subjected to an electrical current via dark energy.

Element Zero - also known as 'eezo', is a rare material that, when subjected to an electrical current, releases dark energy which can be manipulated into a mass effect field, raising or lowering the mass of all objects within that field.

The Citadel - Serves as the political, cultural, and financial capital of the galactic community.

The Genophage - a biological weapon deployed against the krogan by the turians during the Krogan Rebellions. It infected the entire species as a whole with a genetic mutation that raised the probability of krogan dying in stillbirth; a means of population control to quell the Krogan Rebellions.

The Krogan Rebellions - A conflict spanning decades between the krogan and the Citadel Council stemming from the fact that the krogan were aggressively expanding into territories and worlds under control over other council races.

Spectres - are agents entrusted with extraordinary authority by the Citadel Council including the power of life and death over the inhabitants of the galaxy. They form an elite group selected from a number of different species, and their primary responsibility is to preserve galactic stability by whatever means necessary

Reapers - a highly advanced machine race of synthetic/organic starships. The Reapers reside in dark space, the vast, mostly starless space between galaxies. They hibernate there, dormant for thousands of years, before they are given the signal to return. Their origins are completely unknown.

Background: Born into clan Urdnot, Wrex quickly rose in the ranks of his clan due to his incredibly abilities and prowess in battle. He became a leader of one of the smaller Urdnot clans while still relatively young; the youngest krogan to be granted that honor in a thousand years. When the Krogan Rebellions were quelled, many remaining krogan desired to continue the fight, despite the crippling genophage and their newfound inability to reproduce. The most prominent voice in this call to arms was Wrex's father, Jarrod.

However, Wrex felt differently. He felt that, not only did the krogan have insufficient numbers to effectively go into war, they couldn't hope to reproduce fast enough to sustain a war effort. Going into war would effectively wipe their species out. Instead, Wrex led his tribe to focus on breeding over wanton warfare, and eventually, other tribes began to see the merit in this path. They began to fight less and focus on the preservation of their species. This didn't sit well with Warlord Jarrod, who arranged a Crush (a meeting on neutral ground) between all of the Urdnot tribes.

Wrex reluctantly agreed, and met his father at the Hollows, the krogan ancestral burial grounds and holy place where violence is forbidden. Wrex had sensed that this was a trap, and his senses proved to be correct. Jarrod, convinced that he and Wrex could not agree, signaled his warriors to attack and cut Wrex's warriors down where they stood. Wrex managed to survive the assault, but not before burying his knife into Jarrod's chest, killing him. This betrayal served as an epiphany to Wrex: He realized the truth of the krogan; that most would rather die in battle than try and preserve their species as a whole. He realized that his once proud culture that valued courage, strength, and honor had beed reduced to self-indulging in violence and blood lust. They were a perversion of what they once were. With that realization, he turned his back on his people and left his home world of Tuchanka.

For three centuries, he wandered the galaxy, taking different jobs that suited his tastes. He was a bounty hunter, a body guard, a mercenary, anything that paid well and caught his attention. He acquired a name for himself throughout the galaxy, and due to his many adventures, there's little in the galaxy that manages to catch him by surprise.

Wrex meets up with Commander Shepard on the Citadel in pursuit of a crime lord named Fist. Under contract from the Shadow Broker, an individual at the head of an expansive organization which trades in information, Wrex is after Fist for betraying the Shadow Broker and allying himself with Saren Arterius, a rogue Spectre. After Fist is taken care of, Wrex remains with Shepard either out of gratitude, or because he wants to be in the thick of the action as Shepard seeks out Saren Arterius. As Wrex puts it, "a storm's coming, and you and Saren are right in the middle of it."

Wrex found his way into the crew of Shepard's ship, the Normandy, and stuck with Shepard throughout his pursuit of Saren. He got along with the other crew members easily enough, taking a shine to other biotics on the ship out of respect for their abilities in comparison to his own. However, his tolerance of two of the other races, namely turian and salarian (the two responsible for the genophage) is practically non-existent. He finds Garrus, a turian and crew mate on the Normandy, to be incredibly naive at first, and he outright hates any salarians the crew encounter. This intolerance comes to a head on the planet Virmire later in their journey.

On Virmire, Shepard and team discover that Saren may have found a cure for the genophage and is now breeding a krogan army at his base of operations. The STG, a salarian special espionage and tactics group, tasked with investigating Saren's activities on the planet, plan to destroy the breeding facility. Upon finding out that this facility may hold the cure for his people, Wrex becomes enraged. Tensions grow and nearly boil over, but Shepard succeeds in talking his friend down, effectively saving Wrex's life in the process.

It's on Virmire that the majority of Saren's research is uncovered. He wasn't breeding krogan, but was instead doing research into the indoctrination effect, a form of brain-washing used by the Reapers on organics. It is here they encounter a hologram of Sovereign, once believed to be a Reaper ship under Saren's command but in actuality was a Reaper itself. Events unfold and the team find themselves in a climactic battle against Saren and Sovereign at the Citadel which draws Wrex's first adventure with Shepard and the crew of the Normandy to a close.

Following the battle with Saren and Sovereign, Wrex leaves the crew of the Normandy and returns to his home world of Tuchanka. Under his guidance, he manages to unite many of the warring, smaller tribes under clan Urdnot, all in favor of combating the genophage and preserving their species. He institutes a number of reforms. He provides a neutral ground where discussions and exchanges can take place, and makes sure that, in return for their loyalty, Wrex will protect those clans' fertile females, making it unwise for anyone to attack him. Doing so solidifies Wrex as a trustworthy and progressive leader in krogan society, and while he is still opposed by some of the other clans, it shows that under his guidance, the stereotype of the warmongering krogan will begin to fade. Shepard and crew return to Tuchanka later in their travels, and Wrex greets them warmly and excitedly, talking with Shepard about their various exploits when they traveled the galaxy together in pursuit of Saren.

Along with Shepard, on their return to Tuchanka, the crew brings along Grunt, a tank grown krogan youth. Wrex happily accept Grunt into the ranks of clan Urdnot when Grunt and Shepard complete the krogan rite of passage: a particularly grueling test of survival which culminates in a fight against a Thresher Maw, an enormous, subterranean carnivore that resembles a giant worm. Upon killing the Thresher Maw, a feat that has not been accomplished since Wrex completed the rite of passage himself, Shepard gains the respect of all krogan, and Grunt is adopted into clan Urdnot. When it's time to leave, Shepard offers Wrex the opportunity to come along. Wrex reluctantly declines, though, saying that he is needed on Tuchanka to keep the clans united.

This brings us to more recent times. With the threat of a Reaper invasion looming all across the galaxy, Shepard takes to the stars once more to unite the many galactic races into a combined front. Wrex is called back to the Normandy to take part in negotiations with Primarch Victus, the leader of the turians, and Dalatrass Linron, who speaks on behalf of the salarians with Commander Shepard overseeing the proceedings. Wrex knows that his krogan are needed for the war effort, however, he will only come to the turians aid if a cure for the genophage is provided. Dalatrass Linron is appalled by the idea, and states that it could take decades to manufacture a cure, but Wrex has evidence to prove otherwise. He reveals intel received from a mole he has on the salarian home world of Sur'Kesh that there is a fertile krogan female being kept captive at a facility there. Securing her is the only way to cement krogan support in the war effort, so Wrex and Shepard once again join forces and head down to the salarian base on Sur'Kesh. Here, Wrex's brash nature shines through when they refuse to give them clearance to land. Wrex throws open the shuttle doors and performs the first ever 'Krogan air drop,' which consisted of just leaping from the moving shuttle and landing on the pad, only to be surrounded by the STG. Shepard convinces Wrex to stand down and offers to conduct the exchange for the krogan female himself. As such, Wrex is kept under watch while the female is recovered. Shepard meets up with Mordin Solus, a salarian scientist and former crew member, and together they begin the transfer of the krogan female, nicknamed Eve by Mordin, into Shepard's custody. Unfortunately, before the exchange can be made, the facility comes under attack by Cerberus, a human-survivalist paramilitary group attempting to stymie Shepard's efforts in bringing about a united galactic front against the Reapers. Cerberus lays siege to the facility, and through the combined efforts of Shepard, Wrex, and Mordin, Eve is safely brought aboard the Normandy. It is here that we learn that Mordin was Wrex's informant in the STG base, and though Wrex is still outwardly suspicious of salarians, he is civil to him. Together with Wrex and Eve, Mordin is able to synthesize a cure for the genophage, and the team head to Tuchanka to save the krogan.

Personality: Wrex is a very brash and blunt individual. He often speaks his mind and offers insight, whether it's wanted or not. But above all else is his pride. He is prideful in his ability as a warrior and krogan battlemaster, and he harbors immense pride for his people and what they once stood for. He desires nothing more than to lead the krogan into a time of glory, where they are no longer seen as wandering mercenaries, but as a proud, battle-hardened people. He often speaks of times of old as a way of inspiring fellow krogan, and once his trust is earned, he will fight till the end for the sake of that bond. He holds immense respect for Commander Shepard, for his leadership and abilities in battle, as well as many humans that join him. Despite coming from a culture where the females are often focused more on breeding than fighting, he is accepting of people like Ashley Williams, a human female, and respects her desire to fight, remarking that her presence 'gives a different flavor' to the battlefield. Over time, he even considers Garrus a true friend. For all they went through with Saren, and even further with the Reapers, he's come to treat the turian like an old war buddy. The two tend to exchange quips, Wrex remarking often that he's unfortunate to know the only turian who believes he has a sense of humor.

From the onset of the series, Wrex has undergone a great deal of change thanks to Shepard and the rest of the Normandy's crew. He's seen firsthand the merits of working together, and learns to set aside many of the racial intolerance that many of his people still harbor for the sake of progress. He is very future-minded, especially where the krogan are concerned, and even though he seeks to change the galaxy's view on his people, that does mean he'll ever shy away from a fight. Though, more often with Wrex, it's the sheer intimidation in his voice and his tone that often results in him getting what he wants.

Have you read up on how the game works?: I have. Flaming Ferret is the guide plug-in, and Wrex can take on bounties, hire himself out as a bodyguard, or straight up intimidate people to get money.

1st person sample: [There's a commotion on the feed and what sounds like several vogons scrambling. Above the commotion, a deep, angry voice can be heard.] Listen here, you stinking pyjak, you're going to answer my questions now, or I'll be taking your liver with me when I go to see your boss as a snack.

[There's an understandably distressed silence, followed by what sounds like something thick and hard smashing into flesh. A thud is heard a second later, followed by something clearly falling over.]

Alright, you see what I did to him? I'm gonna do that to you, and in a place where you'll wish you had plating, unless you give me a damn answer. I've never seen whatever you are, but I can promise you that if you're squishy, a krogan can kill you.

Now...[And there is a prolonged pause here for effect.] Tell me what system I'm in and how I got here.

3rd person sample: He left the arrivals office of his own accord. Sure, several armed guards came to escort him away from the buildings, but Wrex politely declined in a way only a krogan could: with his fists and the armored plating on his head. He turned his newly 'acquired' shotgun over in his hands as he marched along.

Hmph...he didn't recognize the make. He wasn't entirely sure what that meant, but he really only needed it to do two things: It needed to fire, and whatever he pointed it at had to get hurt. Luckily, he'd already tested those functions before he left arrivals.

As he walked, attempting to get his bearings, he kept an eye on the many different races he was passing. One thing was for sure, this wasn't the Citadel. And what's more, half of these races he'd never even seen before, and he'd been around for centuries. First thing's first though; he needed information. Experience taught the old battlemaster that the best place to find exact information was a bar. He made his way to the darker, less policed areas of the ship. He didn't need directions, hell, places like this were always easy to find. There were always signs; maintenance in the area lacking, the people looked more sure of themselves, more aware of their surroundings. They were alert. Any place that breeds those types were exactly where he wanted to be.

And before long, he finds himself standing outside of some dive in the slums. He strode in and hoped that, at the very least, they had a drink strong enough to liquify a salarian's insides. At least then he might get buzzed.

Questions?: Why did this take me so long to write?
